History of Morristown:

About Shelby County :
|
| From The Shelby Democrat,
April 28, 1892, pg 3: “Morristown was the third town organized in the country. It was laid off May 3, 1828, by Rezin Davis and Samuel Morrison, and has from the start been a place of considerable importance. It was named by Mrs. Nancy Davis, a noted person among the early settlers, in honor of the Rev. S. Morrison, a well-known pioneer preacher of this region. A curious old tradition has fastened itself to the hill in the center of Morristown. It is said that a treasure was concealed there ages ago by the aborigines.” “There is a good graded school here; a Methodist Protestant Church; a post office; a station of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Indianapolis Railroad; ten stores; a tavern, and a large and lucrative grain trade.“ |
Shelby County was organized in 1821. It was named for Gen. Isaac Shelby, who defeated the British at the Battle of Kings Mountain in the Revolutionary War.
Shelby County is divided into 14 Civil Townships as follows: Addison, Brandywine, Hanover, Hendricks, Jackson, Liberty, Marion, Moral, Noble, Shelby, Sugar Creek, Union, Van Buren and Washington.
Shelby County was formerly a part of Delaware County and was occupied by the Miami Indians, though was vacated by them before the organization of the county.
Shelbyville is the County Seat. By 1849 it contained a population of about 900.
According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before December 31, 1830. |
